Linux Distributions For Desktops

Today Linux distributions are not only used as a server OS but also used as desktop OS for personal use, Universities and schools. There are also many Government and private organizations are using Linux/Unix distributions. There are many things on which Linux distros are better than Windows.Let’s discuss on these one by one:

Linux Distributions

Long list of Linux distributions available in the market. It is not possible to paste all names here but you can search and try them from “Distro Watch“. My favorite Linux distributions are:

  • Ubuntu
  • Fedora
  • MX-Linux
  • Elementory OS
  • Deepin
  • Linux Mint
  • Q4OS

Graphics (Desktop Environments)

Desktop environments are nothing but the graphical interface of your OS. There are multiple desktop environments available in Linux. It is not mandatory to use default environment of your Linux OS as windows. You can change your desktop graphics from one to another. My favorite desktop environments are:

  • Mate
  • Cinnamon
  • Budgie
  • Xfce
  • LXDE
  • Gnome

Almost every Linux distros installs common applications by default. For example Libreoffce (Alternate of MS office), Firefox, Thunderbird (Mail client), Pluma (Notepad), Terminal (Similar to CMD in windows), App store ( To browse and install application same as play store in android), VLC, Archive Manager etc. Apart from these you can also install or remove application from app Store or downloading the package from web in the same way as windows.

Money Saving

Price of Microsoft Windows is very high (Approx 9000 Rs for windows 10 while Linux distributions are opensource and free OS. You can download and use without paying any money. According to recent new Indian state Kerala save Rs 3,000 crore by using Linux OS ( ).
